What is an Overachiever?

We are people who have achieved a lot but always feel the need to do more and achieve more.  We are always striving for more. We have the drive, determination, passion, and energy needed to move huge projects forward and love every minute.  We always take on new challenges and love perfection and completing projects beyond expectations. We get a mental high from this. We are sometimes labeled as workaholics.

What Overachieving Can Do To Us

Pushing ourselves at this high level and never getting there often creates an imbalance in our lives and can result in stress-related illnesses. We do great for a long time and then we collapse as our bodies are not designed to be “on” all the time.  I know, as that was my story. I collapsed many times until my doctor finally told me you will die if you don’t stop.

Why Do We Do This To Ourselves?

Different people push themselves for different reasons.

  • I was one that loved what I was doing, and it gave me a “mental high” to be so successful and to make things happen. I thrived on it.  I couldn’t say no, as it was so rewarding.
  • There are others that push themselves because they may be trying to compensate for feelings of insecurity and doubts about their worth. This is one way to feel accomplished or successful.  They may have unresolved issues from their past that are affecting their self-worth, so they go out of their way to prove themselves.  They are constantly in a place of judgment and comparison with others.
  • Then there is the group that has a difficult time experiencing and enjoying the present moment. We put self-love and self-care on the shelf to be able to achieve.  We often do this at the expense of important people in our lives and sabotage our own joy.   I was guilty of this.

How Do You Know If You Are an Overachiever?

You are an overachiever if you say yes to any of the following.  You may want to connect with me so you can improve your life and health and live the life you want while still achieving at a reasonable level.

  • Do you wake up exhausted and need your weekends to reboot but never feel rested?
  • Do you have a lot of non-descript illnesses that continually show up in your life? From headaches to sinus infections or indigestion?  But you just pop a pill and keep pushing?
  • Do you lose momentum or fall off track after starting a project? It might be something you were initially excited about or wanted to do for a long time but aren’t feeling as confident now or have doubts. Is that inner voice holding you back? That self-critic?

What Can You Do About It?

  • When you learn to practice a new type of self-care that doesn’t take more than 5 to 15 minutes per day, you will learn how to be present in the moment and stay there throughout your day. It will nourish your soul, and you will become much happier and more productive without all the stress.
  • If you have an inner voice of doubt, that will affect your overall happiness and health. By learning to shed light on your self-critical beliefs, you can learn to break them and the patterns that aren’t serving you, freeing yourself for more growth, happiness, and accomplishments.
  • You might need to stop and recognize what you value about life. It is easy to see what we like about others but it is harder to see what we love about ourselves. Discovering your true self as you begin to do more fulfilling things can be life-changing
  • When you alter your ways and put time into doing things that are truly satisfying to you, you will find you can restore the balance between your inner and outer worlds and experience true joyful peace.
